New Zealand WW1 BWM 54779 Rflm. H . M Ryan N.Z.E.F - 1/3rd Battalion NZRB
A single, full size Silver British War Medal to 54779 Rifleman Henry Michael Ryan. Henry was a Porter prior to his service, at the Hinemoa Hotel in Rotorua. He started his training on the 3rd of May 1917 as part of J Company, 28th Reinforcements, but on the 14th of July 1917, was transferred to H Company, 27th Reinforcements.
He was spend 2 years and 48 days overseas, in France and also as part of the Army of Occupation as part of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade.
Henry embarked at Wellington on Troop Ship No.88 on the 16th of July 1917.
He disembarked at Liverpool on the 16th of Sept 1917.
Marched into Tidworth Camp, and was posted to the 5th Reserve Battalion of the NZRB same day.
Moved to Brocton Camp at some stage, as he was fined 2 days Pay for being A.W.L (Absent Without Leave) on the 4th of May 1918.
Left for France on the 7th of June 1918.
Joined B Company, 1st Battalion, of the 3rd Battalion of the the NZRB in the field on the 12th of June 1918.
Detached to Corporal School on the 6th of Aug 1918.
Rejoined unit in the field on the 6th of Sept 1918.
Detached to duty in the UK on the 12th of Dec 1918.
Marched into Wellington Reserve Battalion, ex France 22nd of Dec 1918.
Marched into Torquay Demob Camp, ex Sling 30th Dec 1918.
Returned to New Zealand on the SS Athenic on the 14th of July 1919.
Henry was awarded a Victory Medal as well as this BWM. I do not know its where-a-bouts.
Medal is in good condition, but note the dings to one edge which I have photographed.
It has a piece of replacement ribbon attached.
